Basaltic magma contains low amounts of silica (less than 52% by weight. The low silica content also means it has a low viscosity meaning it is more fluid allowing it to flow away from a vent or point which is breaches the earths surface. This quality allows gases to escape easily which prevents build up of explosive gases.
