What was an effect of Pericles' plan to protect Athens from Sparta with the use of a large wall?

 It ended it backfire against the people of Athens because though it did help keep out the invaders, it also trapped in disease as well as insurgents and rebellions that wrecked havoc across the city. Moral of the story: Walls don't always work.
