It was counting on the fact that it was to large for the union to conquer.
To win the civil war the South was counting on the fact that England would be their ally.
- When General Lee made his first attack in the North in September 1862, the south hoped to achieve a crucial victory. The Confederacy hoped to have England as its ally, because the south was an important provider of cotton for England. Unluckily, General Lee could not win the Battle of Antietam, and for this reason the British did not want any more trade with the south and started getting cotton from Egypt. If the south had won this battle, they would have gained the support of England to overpower their armies.
