a) First I would separate the males and females. Make sure that they have the ability to create offspring. See how each male and female react to each other. Make sure that they can stand being next to each other without fighting.
b) I think I would be able to do this within two months. I say within two months because trust takes time to build and animals comfortably level next to each other also takes time to build. They should be able to stay a whole night in the same area without fighting.
c) Wolves and dogs are similar in this case because its up to the female when she is ready to mate with the male. And sometimes the female might not want offspring with a certain male of the group but with a different one. It's also different because with wolves, they want to eat you. With dogs, trust can grow to the point of rolling in the mud together and tolerate you and other humans.
d) Cats are unpredictable. You can cuddle one moment and it scratch you the next out of nowhere. It probably did give off signs of it not wanting to be in the mood that you missed. And female cats might have the same problem of wanting to choose it mate. And they are not similar to a wolf or dog. Dogs and wolves howl and cat meow.
