Based on the experiments on food chain, it is found that each animals eat autotroph i.e. green plants.
Food chain is comprised of various animals belongs to different trophic level. There are three types of animals in our environment: Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore. Animals belongs to these group used to eat animals of other group also.

Food chain refers to the predator prey relationship of the environment where predators are the eater and prey are their foods. In food chain autotroph or green plants are the food of every animal. Second one is Herbivore who only intake green plants like insects, cow, goat etc.
Third stage is occupied by carnivore and fourth one is by omnivore. Carnivore eats both autotroph and herbivores and omnivore used to eat all other animals including autotroph also. For e.g. Green plants-cow-Tiger-Peacock.
