The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early to mid-19th century, and used by enslaved African-Americans to escape into free states and Canada

a series of houses/buildings that were used to help slaves escape to non-slave states so they could be free. The houses would have some sort of flag, blanket, or symbol marking it so slaves knew it was safe. The slaves would travel from house to house until they were, hopefully, able to get to freedom. If the person helping or the slave got caught however: they would be punished and possibly even killed. The Underground Railroad was made by Harriet Tubman, who was once a slave herself.
