What do you think about the concept of homogamy? Is it basically accurate? How does it apply to social class status? Do you think that people gravitate toward a mate of around the same social class? (consciously or subconsciously) Why or why not? Also, give some examples of homogamy or heterogamy (personal or from the media). In what ways does this concept increase or decrease the chances of a successful marriage?

Homogamy is the marriage between two people that are similar to each other. The similarities are generally, in terms of age, culture, religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status and educational background.

Most persons subconsciously migrate to persons in their similar social class because these are the people that they are most familiar with and most likely is similar social circles. There is also less friction in a relationship since both parties share similar ideas and share similar goals.

Two examples of hetero-gamy are

Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchison: These two married each other when Courtney was only 16 years old with a 34 year age gap. They eventually separated and Courtney reported that she needed to have experiences outside of a marriage.
Harry and Megan is the most famous example of social class hetero-gamy. While much of the world imagined that it would be somewhat of a fairy tale, they both relinquished the royal titles and maintained lives as private citizens.

In both of these cases, life did not go "as normal" for both of the parties involved. There were a lot of adjustments and compromises made and in the end the choice will be theirs to stay or leave in their relationship.
