Sample Response: In the middle of the story, the author uses a fast pace to build suspense while the narrator is going back and forth about whether or not to kill the captain. This creates a stressful mood that is similar to the stress the narrator feels. In the last paragraph, the narrator has made a decision, and the pace slows down with longer, descriptive sentences as the captain slowly gets ready to leave the barbershop. The author used different paces in these parts in order to build suspense through the story and then resolve the conflict in the end.

The pace in the middle and end of the story differs due to the fast pace experienced in the initial story by the author while slowing pace when the story is ending.

At the starting of the story, the reader learns about the characters, and in the middle, suspense is developed by the author. On the other hand, when the story is ending, the suspense is being revealed by describing every scenario that is mking the story get slow.

Therefore, the author is using various pace in the paragraph for creating excietemnet and slowly discloing the truth for making the readers more intersted in the story.
