HeLa cell line is a line of immortal cells obtained from a woman named Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta was suffering from cervical cancer and these cells were obtained from her by George Otto Gey. These cells were highly prolific and were easy to be kept alive. Hence, these cells were extremely useful in cell biology research.
Being highly prolific human cells, these can be infected and tested for any factor which might effect the human body. First polio vaccine was tested on HeLa cell, first cloning was done on HeLa cells, similarly several cancer research advances by the use of HeLa cell lines.
