Through a strange set of circumstances, your life depends on whether or not you can make a major discovery in the field of biology within the next few months. You are going to be locked in a giant laboratory for the entire week. What tools, equipment, and supplies would you want to have in there with you? Why those? How similar is this list to what you have available to you already in the school lab?

Answer:

I woud first establish a hypothesis which is still not tested neither verified previously. Then I will conduct rigrous experiments to test it. For that, I would need both basic and advanced level tools. Let's take the example of Coronavirus outbreak and the task is to suggest some treatments for the patients who are already suffering from COVID-19.

At first, I would take already available antiviral drugs because their side effects are already well known and I have very short time to develop/suggest some cure. I would start this work by testing the potential of available drugs for the treatment on mamalian cell lines. For this work, I would need the virus sample and mamalian cells. Then, I will infect the cells with the virus and apply different antiviral drugs at different doses. After hit and trial, I would be able to see that drug X, Y, Z has curing efficiences of 29%, 67% and 34% in 3 days of incubation. Here I would select Y drug and extend the experiment to model organisms, e.g. mouse, rabbits. At this stage, I will infect them and when they are showing symptoms of sickness, I will apply the drug at different doses. I will check the recovery rate for different model organisms for different parameters (different ages, genders, etc). Here, i would have a better idea that the drug is working specifically for specific age group or genders, etc. I would also need basic molecular testing tools for testing purposes.

Hope this helps.
