This line emphasizes the fact that Mr. Flood is alone. He is ignored and has been abandoned by all the people who surrounded him. The effects of loneliness, and the ultimately lonely condition of men is one of the topics most often discussed in such literature. Moreover, Mr. Flood is shown as both a hero (he is the hero of our story) and an ordinary man. Modernist poetry often discusses the trials and errors of common people.
