Implementation of teams is a five-phase process. At one phase in the process, there is a danger that a team will become so internally focused that it may stop communicating with other teams or even develop rivalries with other teams. At which step is this likely to occur?

Forming

This is the initial stage of team developement. At this point, team members generally have concerned with the roles and objectives to achieve. This stage can be relatively short as compared to other stages and may only last a meeting or two.

Storming

At this stage, team members discuss and address the problems they are going to solve. At this stage, team members trying to convince each other and share their ideas to solve the problem and they are more open to each other. At this stage, conflict may arise among team members and often project managers will trying to solve these conflicts.

Norming

At this stage, team member settle their issues and start beginning work on achieving project objectives. At this stage, the conflict will be resolved and team members develop the norm around how they collaborate with each and work together. A hierarchy is established the project will start to progress at a greater pace with less emphasis placed on team development.

Performing

At this stage, team members performing work and achieved significant progress on the project. At this stage, less supervision is required and the project manager's job becomes easier because at this stage team becomes highly motivated and independent.

Adjourning

The final stage is adjourning or as it’s sometimes referred to as, “mourning”. This is when the team is finished its project and is expected to break apart. The project manager should afford the team members' time to celebrate a (hopefully) successful project.
