Initially, his actions seems not concerned that his son is smoking, in response to this information of his son even made him laugh. Yevgeny is a prosecutor of the circuit of court, someone who carries out legal proceedings against a person accused of  a crime. it makes sense to thimk about how much of Yevgeny's legal background will affect the way he handles this problem of his son (Seryozha).
