Quartzite is formed from contact metamorphism. Quartzite is formed when sandstones rich in quartz are physically altered by heat and pressure through the process of contact metamorphism. The conditions are responsible for re-crystallizing the sand grains compactly together to withstand slight and moderate physical pressure.
