The chemical route of entry is absorption
Explanation:
The four chemical routes of entry of hazardous chemicals are through inhalation, absorption, ingestion and injection.
When hazardous chemicals enter through the skin or the eyes, the route is termed as absorption.
Upon absorption, the local area where the chemical is absorbed is immediately affected. The skin layers epidermis and dermis absorbs various chemicals and can even enter the bloodstream.
Caustic or alkaline hazardous chemicals like sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive. When it is absorbed by skin due to accidental spills, the skin can become slimy due to saponification reaction of sodium hydroxide with skin lipids. Sodium hydroxide can burn the skin and cause burn marks.
