Surtesy is Iceland's youngest volcanic island found in a volcanic eruption.
In sandy areas of Surtsey Island inside the colony, the most abundant vegetation species in the vegetation are sea sandwort, annual meadow grass (Poa annua), sea lyme grass, common mouse-ear(Cerastium fontanum),common meadow grass (Poa pratensis), common chickweed (Stellaria media), and the sea mayweed (Matricaria maritima).
The willow plants exist both inside and outside the gull colony.
A few individuals of this species of tea-leaved willow (Salix phylicifolia) and woolly willow (Salix lanata) were found.
