Organisms have adapted over time by natural selection to have certain features that they have developed which enable them to adapt and survive. For example, Shetland pony’s are found on an island with lots of wind and rain, they are adapted with short stocky legs and high fat storage to be able to survive in very harsh conditions.
One of the characteristics of living things is that they are designed in a manner so that they can adapt to the changes in which they live and survive.
• Any characteristic, which helps an organism to reproduce or survive is termed adaptation.
• The adaptations can be behavioral as well as physical.
• The majority of the adaptations take place gradually, these are the traits, which are passed on to offspring from the parents.
• The adaptations are the inheritable features, which enhance the tendency of an organism to survive in an environment.
