The following are the causes and effects of the Rwanda Genocide:

Causes:

  • There was a long ongoing conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus (two major tribes of Rwanda).
  • The crashing of the plane of the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana who was a Hutu himself commenced a violent clash between the Hutus and the Tutsis.
  • The plane had not crashed accidentally but it was shot down by a missile attack. This news spread rapidly and made the Hutus angry.

Effects:

  • The majority of casualties in this genocide were on the side of the Tutsis.
  • The genocide was addressed as one of the worst examples of the failure of conflict handling.
  • The genocide continued for about 100 days and killed 800,000 Rwandans residents.
