Nutrients that become especially important as you age include protein, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin B12. Summary: Older adults generally need fewer calories. However, their nutrient needs are just as high or higher than when they were younger. That's why eating nutrient-rich, whole foods becomes extremely important.

The nutritional needs change over time as follows:

Nutritional needs change with age, with the passage of time the absorption and metabolism of nutrients in our body vary, causing a change in our needs.

  • During the first years of life, the body needs essential nutrients to ensure that the entire body grows and develops properly, energy needs are high to support rapid growth.

  • Peak bone density is reached in adolescence, leading to an increase in the consumption of dairy products and their derivatives, meat and fish, and foods rich in vitamins and minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus.

  • In this adult stage, fewer calories should be consumed, ensuring the contribution of essential amino acids (those that our body cannot synthesize), lipids and carbohydrates, in general, it should be reduced, since energy needs are lower.

The energy consumption of adults can change with age due to:

  • Changes in body weight or body composition.
  • Decreased basal metabolic rate.
  • Decrease in physical activity.
  • Increase in the prevalence of diseases and disability.

Therefore, we can conclude that the nutritional needs change over time, where in the first years of life, energy needs are high to support rapid growth; as a person gets older, the energy needs are lower.
