In 1900, the United States Army Yellow Fever Board came
to Cuba to talk with Finlay. This group, headed by Dr.
Walter Reed, conducted a series of experiments to test
Finlay's beliefs. Reed's team created special conditions
and divided their test subjects into several groups of
people. One group was exposed to mosquitoes that were
infected with yellow fever. The other groups were exposed
to either unclean air or dirty linen that had been in contact
with yellow fever. The result: only people who had been
bitten by infected mosquitoes caught the disease. Reed
and his team of researchers now had their proof. Without
this and other experiments, we would never have had a
yellow fever vaccine
