If that was true he must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream. He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass.

Context: Daisy didn't call Gatsby he knows his fantasy of being  with Daisy is finished He is thrust into this different land where he has no reason all of a sudden because Daisy was what his existence has centered around. She was the catalyst for it all.

Theme: Such as those with the American Dream, he just existed for one goal, and with his disappointment as he sacrificed that, he really have nothing left to live for, so paid a heavy price. He had nothing left to live for now his only hope was gone.

Symbol: The rose is a sign about his own vision, but also of the American way of life, beauty vs. reality. It looks so lovely and encouraging, but it's wrapped with thorns.
