The character of the Ghost, Hamlet Sr. who recently was murdered, who appears briefly to his son Hamlet at the beginning of the work has a significant role throughout the play. The Ghost informs the still living Hamlet that Claudius, the current king, murdered the Ghost and that Hamlet must avenge the death. This starts the chain of events, as Hamlet grows suspicious of those around him, though particularly his uncle. However, with the Ghost’s prompting comes other troubles Hamlet doubts the authenticity of the Ghost and the message he delivers. Hamlet believes the Ghost is there to tempt him to commit murder. The Ghost’s remarks stir up both a vengeful spirit in Hamlet as well continues as source of doubt to the already brooding prince. Although the Ghost’s role is a small and confusing one, his message bookends the play and offers the framework for understanding the motives of Hamlet and later many other characters.
