Darrin is hanging 200 feet of Cristmas garland on the three sides of fencing that enclose his rectangular front yard. The length, the side along the house, is five feet less than three times the width. Find the length and width of the fencing.

Answer :

L = 73.75 feet

W = 26.25 feet

Explanation:

Let the length be given as L

Let the width be given as W

Therefore, the perimeter of the rectangular yard is given by, P = L+L+B+B

P = 2L + 2W   --------------(1)

Given : Length,  L = 3W-5

             P = 200 feet

Therefore, using equation (1), we get

P = 2L + 2W

200 = 2(3W-5) + 2W

200 = 6W - 10 + 2W

200 + 10 = 6W + 2W

210 = 8W

W = 26.25 feet

If W = 26.25 then let's solve for L in P = 2L + 2W

P = 2L + 2W

200 = 2L + 2 (25.25)

200 = 2L + 52.5

2L = 147.5

L = 73.75 feet

Therefore, the length is 73.75 feet

                  the width is  26.25 feet
