Warm currents emanate from the equatorial region because this is the region is most heated by the sun. The currents move towards the poles mainly due to earth's rotation. As they move towards the poles, they cool and get denser hence sinking to the bottom at the poles. The cooler current upwells at the equatorial regions to replace the warmer current moving towards the poles. Cooler currents move towards the equator along the ocean floor. This cycle continues. Ocean currents distribute heat and maintain earth's heat balance
