Explanation

The New Orleans riot of 1866 occurred due to the attack by white Democrats and policemen on black democrats. Louisiana Republicans had called for  a convention to protest against the Black codes and the Republicans thought that the convention was illegal. The massacre was a result of the battle between two factions for power.

The conflicts were rooted in the social structure of Louisiana and has several political and economic causes too.
