The Magna Carta also is known as the Great Charter was a charter of rights that was signed by King John of England in 1215.
It was first drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to establish peace between the King and a group of barons who were rebelling against the unpopular rule of the King.
He agreed to a set of liberties that would place him and sovereigns of the future in England to be under the law.
The charter of rights included access to quick justice, protection from illegal imprisonment for the barons, protection of church rights and limitations to making feudal payments to the Crown.
