There was a significant contingent among the Founding Fathers who were against the idea of a standing army because they were seen as a means for the government to use as a force against their own population. Samuel Adams for example wrote in 1776, that a standing army was “always dangerous to the Liberties of the People.” Professional soldiers were likely to claim some autonomy or special status apart from the regular citizens and become more attached to their military role than the sovereignty of the people and citizen's rights. James Madison was also against the idea of a standing army believing they lead to tyranny on the domestic front. He used the case of Rome in his speeches as an example.
