Explanation:
It is known that like dissolves like. This means that a polar solvent will be able to dissolve a polar solute and similarly a non-polar solute will readily dissolve in a non-polar solvent.
Therefore, more is the polarity of an organic compound more easily it will be soluble in water (polar solvent).
(A) In [tex]CH_{3}-CH_{2}-CH_{3}[/tex] there is not much difference in the electronegativity of carbon and hydrogen bonds. As a result, the compound will not be polar in nature.
On the other hand, [tex]CH_{3}-CH_{2}-CHO[/tex] due to the presence of electronegative oxygen atom there will occur polarity between the combining atoms.
As a result, [tex]CH_{3}-CH_{2}-CHO[/tex] is more polar than [tex]CH_{3}-CH_{2}-CH_{3}[/tex]. Hence, [tex]CH_{3}-CH_{2}-CHO[/tex] would be more soluble in water.
(B) Propanone contains small number of carbon atoms as compared to 3-hexanone. Therefore, propanone will have more polarity as compared to 3-hexanone which have longer hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain.
Therefore, propanone would be more soluble in water than 3-hexanone.
(C) Similarly, there is shorter carbon chain in butanal as compared to hexanal. Hence, butanal is more polar than hexanal also because hexanal is a longer hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain.
Therefore, butanal would be more soluble in water.
