This particular case is an example of Phantom limb syndrome.This is because the amputation was due to infections or illness.And the brain speciously believed the nerves supply to the amputated limb is still there, therefore  continuously  receives pain impulses from this originated nerves.

This leads to misfiring of the nerves leading to pain.
