The film I chose to write about is Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris. It is one of my favorite films. It is based on Stanisław Lem's 1961 novel Solaris. It is a drama that unfolds on a space station, far away from Earth and other civilizations.

There are three cosmonauts in the film. During the course of their mission, their scientific research is stalled when one of the scientists commits death. An arriving psychologist, Chris Kelvin, finds the station in complete disarray. Kelvin eventually finds that the planet they are circling above, Solaris, is somehow recreating physical realities from his memories. At one point early in the film, Kelvin’s late wife, Rheya, appears in his locked room. Later, he discovers that she is simply a manifestation of the planet. However, Rheya is not the person Rheya as such. She is only a manifestation of all of Kevin's memories and recollections about Rheya.

I think Solaris is one of Tarkovsky’s best films. In Solaris, Tarkovsky creates an incredible psychological drama that focuses more on inward than outward drama. The film brings out the fact that we often don't see people as they are. We see them through the veil of our own thoughts and perceptions.
