Waken an Old Lady

by William Carlos Williams

Old age is
a flight of small
cheeping birds
skimming
bare trees
above a snow glaze.
Gaining and failing
they are buffeted
by a dark wind—
But what?
On harsh weedstalks
the flock has rested,
the snow
is covered with broken
seedhusks
and the wind tempered
by a shrill
piping of plenty.

What is the theme of this poem?

Elderly people should not go outside in snowy and windy weather.
For young people, life is full of challenges.
Elderly people should live life fully despite the difficulties of old age.
Young birds should not try to fly during strong winds.

Respuesta :

After reading the ''Waken an Old Lady'' by William Carlos Williams I have mixed feelings about two of the options represented above. At first I thought, that elderly people should not go outside in snowy and windy weather. Then I read for the second time and now I am pretty sure that the correct statement that shows the theme of this poem is the third option ''Elderly people should not go outside in snowy and windy weather.''. Do hope it will help you.
