The People's Republic of China was proclaimed on 1949 by Mao Zedong almost to the end of the civil war in China as a result of the taking over of the country by Communist forces and the imminent defeat of the Nationalists. The declaration of this new state occurred in the Tiananmen in Pekin. The Nationalists led by the Kuomintang were only in small cities to the South in Taiwan.
The creation of this new state was not internationally acknowledged by the West, as there became an ideological division in the cold war. This resulted in Mainland China and the islands (Taiwan) forming two countries with some significant differences in the carrying on of political economy.
Mao Zedong established a strong state and a cult to his personality, with his coming to power, comes an end to decades of civil unrest. The People's Republic of China focuses then on the reconstruction and foundation of national plans.
