Punjab and Haryana are India's major rice-growing states, making up for about 15% of the country's rice production. In these regions, the high productivity of rice cultivation is due to two main factors.
The first one is a choice to mix different rice varieties, especially high-yielding ones (that is to say, producing plentifully and resulting in lots of financial gain). Indian farmers chose to plant these profitable crops in more places, too.
While the country is liable to droughts, Punjab and Haryana have become particularly drought-resilient. Substantial investments have been made in irrigation infrastructure in these states, mostly groundwater pumping.
