hildren with Asperger's syndrome - high functioning autism - have withdrawal and developmental delay rather because of the lack of effectiveness in relationships with others, which leads them to feel very frustrated.
They show a strong desire to interact with other people, but with greater difficulty. Even sometimes they obsessively repeat behaviors, specialize in some tasks and look at specific topics such as dinosaurs, computing, among others. And in some cases they don't show any reaction to an emotional situation or understand social codes, so they isolate themselves by not getting acceptance from their peers.
Their intelligence is above average and they can excel in fields such as computer science or science. But they have language disorders and difficulty inserting, problems in eye contact, postures, gestures, facial expressions and are clumsy in movements.
“This syndrome is classified within the global developmental disorders. Mostly there are no neurological lesions, but it can have a genetic origin. It must be explained that not in all cases it means inheritable, many studies are being done today, but a single or precise cause has not yet been defined, ”said Dr. Tomás Mesa, neurologist at Red Salud UC.
The specialist points out that they are children who mainly fail in the social and language area, they do well in school, they have good grades, but they isolate themselves, they do not behave according to what society demands. Their motor capacity is improving over time and in adult life, although they are not athletes they can work. “There are many Aspergers who are married, have their lives, but do not share, they are very lonely families. However, with a good multidisciplinary management they can be inserted and live perfectly in society ”
