Russia’s withdrawal from the war was caused by the October Revolution of 1917 that led Bolsheviks into power. Russian war efforts were causing famine in the country, which was why one of the slogans of the revolution was “Peace, land and bread”. Russian retreat made possible for the germans to focus their resources on the west front.
In 1917 the western front was also reinforced with American support because of german attacks on American submarines and also because of a german telegram intercepted by British intelligence. This telegram showed an offer made by Germany to Mexico to help them get back lost territories to US in the Mexican-American war (1846-1848). The “Zimmerman telegram” as it was known and the increasing perception of Germany as the main aggressor caused US to entry into World War I. All of this contributed to transforming the western front into the main theater of the war.
