6x is the middle term.

[tex]\frac{6}{2} =3[/tex]

[tex]3^2=9[/tex]

To complete the square , add and subtract 9

[tex]f(x)=x^2-6x+9-9+1[/tex]

[tex]f(x)=(x^2-6x+9)-9+1[/tex]

[tex]f(x)= (x+3)(x+3)-8[/tex]

[tex]f(x)= (x+3)^2-8[/tex]

So 9 unit tiles is added to the function to complete the square
