Further explanation

The Caribbean though viewed by many as an archipelago of warm, peaceful and tranquil islands has in today’s society been characterized by grave intolerance and mistrust at all levels.  It is not a surprise that this is harsh reality in the region as it is a ‘melting pot’ with diverse cultures, religions, norms and customs.  It might be a bit controversial to state that there is some direct correlation between today’s realities and the Caribbean’s tragic past when many ideologies were forced onto the Caribbean and its people in the name of colonization.  It is imperative to understand this apparent connection between past and present to adequately rationalize the current atmosphere in the Caribbean where grave intolerance exists at all levels.

Colonization and historical conditions that led to the creation of the Caribbean nations are essential in understanding the social, political, and economic issues in the region. The foundations for racial ideology in the Caribbean were established by the seventeenth century when these nations were New World colonies (Moreira 45). The English colonists institutionalized slavery on a large scale and set the stage for ideological aspects of race. Racial slavery was used to support the colonists’ insatiable desire for land and labor. This enabled them to earn huge profits across the Caribbean from the slave trade and plantation agriculture that used slave labor.
