They are just one of the elements that compound CONJUGATED VERBS (Tense, mood aspect, voice) and is used to distinguish how the verb is expressed and if the actions expressed are orders (imperative mood), real facts (indicative mood) or wishes/doubts (subjunctive mood); so, remember: it exists three moods in Spanish:
