In a research that looked mainly at how failure feedback affects subsequent performance on similar tasks and whether failure affects high and low self-esteem persons differently, Brown and Dutton (1995) found that people who score high on self-esteem tend to:
a)work just as hard on the second task as they did on the first task in which they failed.
b) lose their motivation to perform the second task after failing once.
c) readily accept their failure on the first task.
d) be more concerned with avoiding failure and refrain from performing subsequent tasks after failing in a task
The high self-esteem people work just as hard on the second task as they did on the first task in which they failed.
Option a
The survey was done regarding the reactions feedback to criticism and failure feedback to know about the progress of work of both low and high self esteem people. The lower esteem people's performance would be poor on the subsequent task.
The people who are high on self-esteem ,their failure is not consistent with their self respect, thereby they are not ready to accept the feedback.so they work harder to revert the feedback thinking that first task failure was due to accident or mistake. The feedback motivates them to work harder more on the second task. This kind of motivation is only due to the fact that their view of self-concept would be totally different from the people who fail.
