The Cuban missile crisis occurred in 1962 due to the fact that the Soviet Union wanted to install ballistic missiles in Cuba. That would make them in range of the US so the US created a blockade so as to prevent the missiles from reaching Cuba. In the end, the missiles were not places, but the US also had to dismantle their Turkey placed missiles. A phone line was installed as well that connected the Soviet Union and the American president.
