Melissa rolls 2 fair dice. The probability of getting a total of 12 is [tex]\frac{1}{36}[/tex]

Solution:

Given, Melissa rolls 2 fair dice and adds the results from each.

We have to work out the probability of getting a total of 12

The probability of an event is given as follows:

[tex]=\frac{\text { favourable outcomes }}{\text { total possible outcomes }}[/tex]

Now, total outcomes = 6 for 1st die [tex]\times[/tex] 6 for 2nd die = 6 [tex]\times[/tex] 6 = 36.

Now, favourable outcomes = 1 [ since, we have to get a sum of 12, and only one case exists i.e. 6 + 6]

[tex]\text { So, probability }=\frac{1}{36}[/tex]

Hence the probability of getting a total of 12 is [tex]\frac{1}{36}[/tex]
