President Truman adopted a policy of `"Containment" toward Vietnam post WW2. Containment involved supressing the growth of communism. He did this by financially and militarily funding the French, who were in control of Vietnam (called French Indochina at the time). The French were renowned for their cruelty against the Nationalists (who were communists) in Vietnam.
