What is Fungi?
Fungi are eukaryotic organisms with their cells contain membrane-bound organelles and clearly defined nuclei.
Historically, fungi were included in the plant kingdom but because fungi lack chlorophyll and are distinguished by unique structural and physiological features (i.e., components of the cell wall and cell membrane), they have been separated from plants.
A characteristic that places fungi in a different kingdom from plants, bacteria, and some protists is chitin in their cell walls.
Fungi, like animals, are heterotrophs and they acquire their food by absorbing dissolved molecules, typically by secreting digestive enzymes into their environment.
Fungi do not photosynthesize. Fungi are the principal decomposers in ecological systems.
Importance of Fungi:
1. Bacteria and fungi are responsible for breaking down organic matter and releasing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere.
2. Fungi are essential to many household and industrial processes, notably the making of bread, wine, beer, and certain cheeses.
3. Fungi are also used as food
