G1: the cell becomes metabolically active and undergoes growth.

S: The DNA of the cell replicates at this stage and at the end, each chromosome will have two sister chromatids

G2: The replicated chromosomes are distributed to daughter cells. This phase is also a preparatory phase for mitosis

M: Eukaryotic cell separates the chromosomes into two identical sets in two nuclei. The process of nucleus division is called Karyokinesis. After this stage, the separation of cytoplasm, organelles called cytokinesis follows.
