Instead, the umbrella is a "black, molded tree with metal branches." That is a way which most people would never view an umbrella. The description already makes a boring object look funny, but the author is not satisfied. Now, it is the turn of the inventor. He is not depicted as an ingenious and intelligent human being, but as someone who "grew desperate" because he wanted to "fold up a bush and take it for a stroll, dangling from his arm." That being impossible, he came up with the umbrella. The image the author gives us is hilarious, though. Imagining a person carrying a bush around, dangling from his arm, to protect him from eventual rain, is comic and absurd.
