The Phoenician people traveled and traded goods all over the  Mediterranean sea.

Although seafaring in the Mediterranean had been developed before their appearance in history, and although the Phoenicians acquired many useful maritime experiences from the Egyptians and the Cretans, they are still the first people to capture the entire Mediterranean Sea through systematic and organized maritime activity.

Explanation:

  • As Phoenicians lived in a geographical hub, where political and cultural influences of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Crete were acquired, and where an important trade route flowed from Egypt by coast to Kadesh in Syria, and thence from Aleppo to Karkemish on the Euphrates. and a larger scale trade began to develop on it.
  • Such land configuration also conditioned the development of small-town states, militarily weak and politically insecure, but commercially strong.
  • They established a number of colonies in Cyprus, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Spain (Cádiz and Málaga) and northern Africa (Utica, Carthage).
