The three hypothesis about the Indus script:
Indus script include the symbols which were used by the people during the Indus valley civilization. There were three hypothesis related to this script which were
- Dravidian hypothesis which is the most suitable one for this script.
- Sanskrit hypothesis which was given by an Indian archaeologist named Shikaripua who was responsible for interpreting this language.
- Miscellaneous hypothesis which included a number of hypothesis related to Indus script where most important was Indo-Aryan language.
Answer: The Indus script has three main hypothesis's that are identified:
- The first hypothesis states that the symbols on the Indus script do not represent a language at all, but in fact resemble symbols like those you would find on a traffic sign, for example.
- The second hypothesis holds that the Indus script represents an Indo-European language.
- Lastly, the third hypothesis believes that the Indus people were the ancestors of people living in South India today. It reasons that the INdus Script represents an ancient form of the Dravidian language family, which is spoken in much of South India today. Since the Indus Valley was so large, the hypothesis elaborates that since a small amount of people living in North India speak a Dravidian language, it provides evidence of the language being spoken all over India at a period of time.
