Elaine should as a manager must talk to Colleen first, and if she confirms the story, go to the company president; but if she denies it, then Elaine should talk to each of the people who spread the rumor.
The manager has to handle harassment rumors in the most sensitive manner by establishing an open door policy and addressing the gossips clearly. It is because an inappropriate or invalid rumor would harm the productivity and mental state of employees.
Elaine should first collect information regarding the rumor from the person who got victim of the harassment. In case, the rumor is true further discussions with the director should conduct and if the rumor is incorrect then it should be clarified to all employees for making the work environment rumor-free.
