Maslow's hierarchy of needs was recently updated by Kenrick and other colleagues adding some new needs based on modern culture and its changes, as well as development of the person as he/she goes through different stages of life. It's based in the life-story theory.

The new needs included were:

Mate acquisition: it refers to finding a partner.
Mate retention: this has to do not only with finding a partner but to develop a commitment with the partner to make a long term relationship.
Parenting: This stage comes when the person has its own kids.

We can see in the picture below the differences between both theories, take in mind that in Kenrick's theory the needs overlap and the ones are the bottom continue to be present in later stages.
