The human circulatory system is involved in the pumping blood from the heart to the different parts of the body. It consists of the heart and the blood vessels.
Blood rich in oxygen from the left atrium move into the left ventricle of the heart and is pumped into the aorta, which is a very large and elastic artery. The aorta carries the oxygenated blood to the thoracic and abdominal cavities where they are supplied to all organ systems by the arterial branches from the aorta.
Tisusue metabolism in the organ systems causes low content of oxygen and high content of CO2. This blood is called deoxygenated blood and is returned to the right atrium of the heart. The blood then enters the right ventricle. It is pumped into the pulmonary trunk and arteries. The blood is then transported to the lungs where gaseous exchange occurs between the lung capillaries and the alveoli of the lungs.
The oxygenated blood is then transported to the organ systems and the cycle continues.
